Wow, I shouldn't have ate if I knew the article was going to be so repulsive! Well I did find 5 words to describe these people;
hypochondriacs -rituals that focus on the human body appearance and health, but their worried about there teeth falling out!
insecure- they dont like how they look and think the body is ugly, yet they pay close attention to their bodies by involving themselves in all the rituals. they dont expose their bodies and bathe in private. Some of them want to be thin or bigger breast.

idolatrous- believe and worship shrines and medicine men in to overcome there impurities and fears
wiccan- they believe in potions and charms,herbs and magical practitioners, they seek a holy-mouth-man to remove demons with witchcraft
Masochists- they harm themselves with sadistic routines like women placing there heads in ovens, sticking needles in there flesh and lacerating faces.
Part B
1. I feel like there all words used for the medically unstable and serial killers!
2.Yes, almost all my words are passing judgement. The ones I used that go against my beliefs are masochist,wiccans and idolators because I believe they are things you want to do or choose to do and the other two hypochondriacs and insecurity are medical /physical illness. So I'm still justifying my word choice on my beliefs..lol _great_this is bad habit, thanks.
3. My biased words I used to characterize them based on my prejudgement were Hypochondriacs and I could have used health aware and for Insecure I could have used body-image conscience. I even feel better now that I found something more positive to say w/o the bashing!
4.Gosh, I really gave it to those people from my point of view. I need accept the differences and not compare them to my own beliefs which make me spill judgement. I do believe I have a good poker face around people I consider different but my mind will always be commenting. No, I dont think you can be completely bias-so should there be no jurors?
It was interesting to read your comments in Part B. A couple of thoughts:
ReplyDeleteFirst, I'm not convinced that you are aware that the Nacerima are actually Americans. ("Nacerima" spelled backwards is "American".) Miner is actually describing the health and beauty practices of Americans in this article. Does that make you feel any differently about your choice of words? Are you arguing that Americans are insecure, idol-worshiping, masochistic,hypochondriac witches? :-)
In the last paragraph, you say:
"No, I dont think you can be completely bias-so should there be no jurors?"
Of course there are jurors, but that's not what we are talking about. You are acting as an anthropologist here, not as a judge of correct behavior, so we should try to remove as much bias as possible.
I did see in the assignment that the word was backwards meaning he was talking about Americans, it was shocking at first because of the words I used and when I went back and read it ..yea okay I get! So does this make me feel any different about my word choice, Yes because it was bias but some of it does fit Americans who are vain or health conscience too! Maybe his story was elevated to get you thinking but not to take things so literal.I dont think all Americans are my word choices. I didn't mean to get philosophical about the jurors but it made me think it we all have a bias opinion how can we judge. -should have left my thought out of the assignment, I went left!
DeleteHi Cathy,
ReplyDeleteGood point you make about the jurors. I think they go through a series of questions for jurors to determine if they would be biased but it seems there is no way that they can be non judgmental. I know that anthropologists practice reflexivity so they must often check themselves as they work to ensure they are not being ethnocentric.
